We remind you that independent interpretation of the results is unacceptable, the information provided below is for reference purposes only.

Sodium (Na) in overnight urine is a laboratory test used to assess the amount of sodium excreted in the urine during the night. Sodium is an essential electrolyte involved in the regulation of fluid and electrolyte balance, fluid volume, and blood pressure.

Urinary sodium measurement may provide information about how the kidneys regulate and excrete sodium and may contribute to the assessment of fluid and electrolyte balance in certain clinical situations.

Indications

  • assessment of fluid and electrolyte balance;
  • assessment of renal sodium excretion;
  • investigation of disorders of sodium metabolism;
  • assessment of kidney function in certain clinical situations;
  • monitoring of patients with blood pressure or fluid and electrolyte balance disorders, as recommended by a physician;
  • assessment of the response to certain treatments, as recommended by a physician;
  • other clinical situations, as recommended by a physician.

Procedure

The test is performed using a urine sample collected overnight, according to the laboratory’s instructions. The amount of sodium excreted in the urine during the collection period is determined in the laboratory.
