Free Protein S (antigen)

600.00 MDL

We remind you that independent interpretation of the results is unacceptable, the information provided below is for reference purposes only.

Free Protein S (antigen) is a laboratory test that determines the concentration of the free fraction of protein S in the blood. Protein S is a natural anticoagulant and acts as a cofactor for protein C, contributing to the regulation of blood coagulation and limiting excessive blood clot formation.

Reduced free protein S levels may be associated with an increased risk of thrombosis and may have hereditary or acquired causes.

Indications

  • assessment of thrombosis risk;
  • suspected hereditary or acquired protein S deficiency;
  • personal or family history of venous thrombosis;
  • investigation of recurrent episodes of venous thromboembolism;
  • assessment of abnormalities of the natural anticoagulant system;
  • additional assessment for thrombophilia together with other laboratory tests;
  • evaluation in situations associated with an increased risk of thrombosis, as recommended by a physician;
  • other clinical situations, as recommended by a physician.

Procedure

The test is performed using a venous blood sample. The antigen concentration of the free fraction of protein S is determined in the plasma in the laboratory.

If you experience any symptoms or exacerbation of a condition, it is essential to consult with a qualified healthcare professional for proper diagnosis and treatment recommendations. Only a licensed medical practitioner can accurately interpret test results and determine the appropriate course of action. Additionally, it is recommended to have tests conducted at the same laboratory to ensure consistent and accurate result interpretation, as different laboratories may employ varying methodologies and units of measurement for similar tests.

Preparation:

  • informing the physician and medical staff about the medications being taken, particularly anticoagulants and other medications that may affect blood coagulation;
  • informing the physician about pregnancy, if applicable, as well as hormonal therapy and known conditions that may affect the coagulation system;
  • following the physician’s recommendations regarding preparation for sample collection;
  • do not discontinue any medications without the physician’s recommendation;
  • additional recommendations may be provided by the physician depending on the indication for the examination.
