Lacrimal duct irrigation is a diagnostic and therapeutic medical procedure aimed at restoring the patency of the tear drainage system and removing mucous plugs, inflammatory content, or pathological secretions.

The procedure is used in cases of impaired tear drainage, which may lead to excessive tearing, discomfort, and recurrent inflammatory eye conditions.

Lacrimal duct irrigation is performed by a physician within the consultation, after examination and assessment of the lacrimal system.

Indications

  • persistent or intermittent tearing (epiphora);
  • suspected obstruction of the lacrimal drainage system;
  • dacryocystitis (inflammation of the lacrimal sac);
  • recurrent eye infections;
  • mucous or purulent discharge from the lacrimal puncta;
  • discomfort in the inner corner of the eye;
  • assessment of lacrimal duct patency.

Procedure

The physician performs an eye examination and evaluation of the lacrimal puncta and may apply local anesthesia if necessary.

A sterile solution is gently introduced through the lacrimal puncta into the lacrimal canaliculi using a specialized cannula or probe to assess patency and flush the lacrimal system.

The procedure is performed within the consultation under medical supervision.

Contraindications

  • acute purulent eye infections;
  • significant edema preventing the procedure;
  • acute ocular trauma;
  • suspected lacrimal system injury requiring surgical treatment;
  • conditions where the physician considers the procedure contraindicated.

The decision to perform the procedure is made by the physician after consultation.

Recovery / restrictions

No specific recovery is usually required.

Temporary effects may include:

  • tearing;
  • mild eye irritation;
  • local discomfort.

It is recommended to:

  • avoid rubbing the eyes;
  • maintain proper eye hygiene;
  • follow medical recommendations.

Advantages

  • restoration of lacrimal duct patency;
  • reduction of tearing and discomfort;
  • functional assessment of tear drainage;
  • minimally invasive procedure;
  • prevention of chronic inflammatory conditions.

Preparation:

No special preparation is usually required.

A prior medical consultation is mandatory to assess the lacrimal system and determine the indication for the procedure.
