Initial epileptologist consultation

The consultation with an epileptologist is a specialized medical evaluation of patients with suspected epilepsy or other paroxysmal neurological disorders. The epileptologist is responsible for diagnosing seizure types and establishing appropriate treatment.

Indications

• episodes of unexplained loss of consciousness
• convulsive seizures or paroxysmal motor events
• sudden “blanking out” episodes (absences)
• suspected epilepsy in children or adolescents
• recurrent neurological paroxysmal events
• post-traumatic seizure episodes
• sleep disturbances with suspected epileptic activity
• first-time seizure episode

Procedure

• detailed medical history
• neurological examination
• review of previous investigations (EEG, MRI, labs)
• classification of seizure type
• recommendation of additional tests
• preliminary diagnosis
• initiation or adjustment of therapy
• follow-up plan
